Check boundaries and the school year
Use the district's enrollment and boundary resources to check the applicable year and any proposed or adopted changes that could affect your plans.

Read the program's eligibility, application process and current deadlines. Check transportation separately from admissions.

Use the state's private-school resources and directory as a starting point, then verify grade availability and admissions directly with the school.
Open the state's private-school resources →Three routes that should not be confused
1. Address-based public-school assignment
Check the exact property through the district, including elementary, middle and high school as relevant. Do not assume two nearby communities have identical assignments, or that a postal city determines the school. Confirm the year shown on any map or result.
2. Choice and career programs
A program can have a separate application, eligibility review and selection process. A home near the program does not establish admission. Ask whether the program is open to applicants outside its attendance area or is restricted to students already zoned for that school. Keep the application timetable separate from your closing date.
3. Other enrollment options
For controlled open enrollment, reassignment or another requested arrangement, obtain the district's current requirements for that route. Do not assume that an existing placement, transportation arrangement or sibling's status automatically applies after a move.

Questions that make a private-school comparison useful
Build a shortlist using the grades, learning approach and practical requirements you need. This guide does not rank, endorse or list individual schools.
Admissions and classroom fit
- Is there a place in the intended grade and year, or only a waitlist?
- Which records, assessments, recommendations, visits or interviews are required?
- What learning support, language support or accommodations are available, and how are needs assessed?
- Which curriculum and later-grade pathways should you understand?
Cost and daily logistics
- What is the complete cost beyond tuition: enrollment deposits, technology, activities, meals, transport and aftercare?
- What are the deposit, withdrawal and refund terms?
- Which campus serves the student's grade, and does that change in later years?
- What are the actual arrival, dismissal and after-school transport arrangements?
Directory inclusion is a starting point for investigation, not evidence that a school is the right fit. Ask directly about accreditation, admissions standards, staffing, services and any financial-aid or scholarship requirements important to your decision.
Test a school day, not just a map distance
For each shortlisted home, try the trip around the actual arrival and dismissal windows. Include the time to leave the community, reach the correct entrance, queue for drop-off and return. Repeat for aftercare or activities if those change the route.
For siblings on different campuses, compare the complete sequence. Ask about bus eligibility, pickup points, travel time and late activity transport. A short geographic distance does not establish a convenient daily schedule.
A practical enrollment and moving checklist
- Before narrowing the home search: identify grades, desired enrollment year, school requirements, commute limits and acceptable alternatives.
- For every serious property: save a dated address-lookup result and confirm any uncertainty with the district. Ask about boundary changes if your plans extend beyond the year shown.
- Before relying on an admissions offer: obtain written terms, grade and campus confirmation, required deposits and outstanding conditions. Align deadlines with your housing timetable.
- Before enrollment: review the official registration checklist for residency, identity, academic and health records. Families arriving from abroad should ask about translations, record evaluation and placement procedures.
- Before moving: confirm the first attendance date, arrival procedures, transportation, aftercare and whom to contact if the move or closing is delayed.
Submit student records through the school or district's designated channel. You do not need to send a child's health, identity or academic records to your real estate agent to begin a home search.
Can a listing's school names be relied on?
Use them as leads to verify. Check the actual address, grade and school year with the district. Listings and third-party maps may reflect a different date or an incomplete picture of enrollment options.
Should a school rating decide which home I buy?
Use any rating as one input and examine what it measures and when. Compare program fit, available support, admissions, visits and the daily schedule. This guide does not label schools or neighborhoods as best or worst.
What if my move happens during the school year?
Ask the district or prospective school about current placement, required records and timing before assuming attendance can begin on your moving date. Keep an alternative plan if approval, a place or transportation remains unresolved.
Connect the school plan to the home search
I can help organize the addresses and community details for your shortlist. The district and each school's admissions office should confirm assignments, placement and enrollment requirements.
